Fun Local Spaces with Live Music in Charlottesville

Charlottesville is a little town with a big appetite for music and arts! Whether we’re cheering for world-touring artists at the John Paul Jones Arena, or just feeling the mellow vibes of a local group, there’s always someone playing something in C’ville. The Visit Charlottesville website has a “Concerts & Live Music” page which keeps track of new and exciting events and acts coming to town.

That said, there are so many opportunities to enjoy smaller performers all around this area any day of the week. Often, they’re playing at fun, casual venues that can combine music with food, drinks, or outdoor ambiance. Here are some of our favorite places to enjoy live music in Charlottesville!

Carter Mountain Orchard

There’s no denying we’re partial to our own venue! Carter Mountain’s Thursday Evening Sunset Series is a Charlottesville tradition, and visitors are welcome every Thursday from April to September to savor the sunset from above town. Grab a spot at a table, spread out a blanket, or dance the dusk away, it’ll be a good time regardless!

There’s a new band every week, a variety of food trucks, delicious Carter Mountain Wine, Bold Rock Hard Cider, and the best view you can find at any music venue we’ve heard of. So it’s worth making the trip up the mountain multiple times while you have the chance! We even have season passes available if you want to make it a weekly habit.

The Downtown Mall

The pedestrian mall is a great space to hang out, shop, or grab a bite, and it’s also a prime source of nightly live music in Charlottesville. The Whiskey Jar features live music almost every night, with regulars like Betty Jo’s Boogie Band on Mondays. Wednesdays and Thursdays have live samba, rumba, and Latin guitar at The Bebedero, while Miller’s has jazz on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. For more of a concert venue feel, The Jefferson regularly hosts big acts and dance parties. The Southern, by contrast, has a more intimate, indie stage feel.

Lots of restaurants and bars have one-off or impromptu performances, so if you have time beforehand, it might be worth taking a stroll and seeing what’s playing! For a more detailed list of smaller performances, check the Cville Scene.

Local Wineries

Chiswell Winery visitors enjoying live music in lawn chairs.

For a more relaxed live music venue, wineries offer comfortable spaces out in nature—and wine, of course! If your ideal live music experience includes chatting with friends and enjoying a drink or two, Charlottesville-area wineries might be perfect for you. The Monticello Wine Trail boasts beautiful mountain sunsets, crisp Virginia breezes, and wineries that are as well known for enjoyable atmospheres as for their award-winning wine.

Just south of town, Eastwood Farm and Winery has regular performances in their Barn venue, including dancing on Saturday nights. The historic Jefferson Vineyards features acoustic performances Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Keswick Vineyards features live music every Saturday, as well as their Wine Down Wednesday series. And near Crozet, all summer long our sister venue Chiswell Farm & Winery features both their Summer Sundown series on Friday evenings and afternoon performances on Sippin’ Sunday. If you’re coming to a Chiswell performance, we recommend packing a picnic to go with your wine!

College and University Concerts

The Charlottesville Symphony performing at UVA's Old Cabell Hall.

Every school year, Charlottesville’s population grows by a lot, and there’s a good amount of world-class musicians among those students and faculty! UVA’s Department of Music features over a hundred concerts every year from dozens of local and visiting ensembles. These concerts are perfect ways to show visiting relatives live music in Charlottesville while touring the University’s gorgeous Grounds. It’s not just classical music either, with jazz, choral, and even a computer ensemble performing throughout the year.

Neighboring Piedmont Virginia Community College also boasts a full-featured performance season, including dance and folk music. While both schools have more traditional sit-down music venues for quieter performances, their beautiful outdoor spaces and convenient locations mean they’re a relaxing way to spend an evening with friends and family.

The Ting Pavilion

Photo from Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau

Located at the east end of the Downtown Mall, the Ting Pavilion is an iconic Charlottesville landmark that frequently hosts out-of-town bands and local acts. Its unique blend of covered seats and lawn viewing combines the best of open-air and interior concerts. Best of all, being on the Downtown Mall means you can count on dinner and a show!

Fridays After Five is a free concert series that runs all summer, starting at 5:30 PM. The musical acts are local artists, and concessions benefit local non-profits, which is why Fridays after Five has a well-deserved decades-long reputation as a Charlottesville institution.

Crozet Breweries and Orchards

Visitors at Chiles Peach Orchard during an evening concert.

Grown from a rural farming community, the small town of Crozet is a unique cultural destination just west of Charlottesville. The famous breweries and orchards that pepper Crozet’s lovely Blue Ridge foothills also regularly host local and out-of-town musicians. Whether you call Crozet home, or you’re planning an impromptu evening out from Charlottesville, it’s a music-lover’s place to be!

When it comes to brewery gigs, the Main Taproom Stage at Pro Re Nata is a well-loved, exciting evening venue on Fridays and Saturdays. Starr Hill Brewery enjoys weekend music as well, plus regular Sunday afternoon performances. If you’re looking for more of a family vibe, Henley’s Orchard features semi-regular live performances, especially during HenleyFest in fall. Chiles Peach Orchard has live performances from 1–4 PM, May–October, every Saturday and Sunday.

An orchard is an especially fun place to enjoy live music near Charlottesville, because there’s so much to do! Spaces without concert ticketing like Chiles Peach Orchard have a drop-in, drop-out atmosphere perfect for grabbing a snack, playing an outdoor game, or even picking your own fruit before, during, or after the performance. An afternoon visit to a Crozet brewery or orchard could easily turn into an all-day adventure!

Charlottesville might be a quiet city most of the time, but we get loud when we want to! So make a plan to see some live music this week by check out our calendar. There are all sorts of events being planned at Carter Mountain and other Chiles Family Orchards that might catch your fancy. We hope to see you soon!

8 Berry Tasty Blueberry Breakfast Recipe Ideas (Blackberries Too!)

There’s nothing quite as refreshing as a handful of fresh-picked blueberries or blackberries on a hot summer day—especially if you picked them yourself at Chiles Peach Orchard! Once you bring the basket home, though, the fun really starts. There are so many delicious ways to enjoy your berries, and we’re especially fond of starting the next morning with a homemade berry treat.

You don’t need to be a master chef to enjoy these blackberry and blueberry breakfast recipes. Take a look at some of our favorite easy ways to squeeze the most out of the berries you bring home!

Blueberry Pancakes

Blueberries especially are a mouthwatering addition to any pancake recipe. While frozen blueberries can stain your batter or add unwanted water, fresh blueberries mix in perfectly. If you haven’t tried making your pancakes with fresh-picked blueberries, you’re in for a treat! Try this recipe from King Arthur Baking.

Remember to top your pancake stack with some fresh berries, too! They’re sweet enough to dig in even without syrup—if you’re interested, though, we do have some great syrup recommendations!

Roasted Blackberry Breakfast Bowl

Yogurt is a healthy, reliable breakfast choice, and there are so many ways to tweak and customize it! No need to buy the flavored stuff with a bunch of added sugar: just a few seconds in the microwave can get berries juicy, gooey, and ready to stir in and flavor plain Greek yogurt.

Why not go all-out, though? Know Your Produce’s recipe combines oatmeal, cinnamon, blackberries, blueberries, and maple syrup in the oven to create a decadent and warm yogurt topper. Feel free to keep adding more stir-in favorites, your imagination’s the limit!

Blueberry Oatmeal Bars

Let’s face it, it’s hard to find time for an elaborate breakfast during the work week. That’s why we love recipes that can last the whole week, like the blueberry oatmeal bars from Erin Clarke at Well Plated.

These bars are an easy, delicious blueberry breakfast recipe, and a healthy alternative to the storebought breakfast bars. Best of all, they last up to five days in the fridge! A quick bake on Sunday can set you up with a morning to look forward to all the way to Friday.

Blackberry Tart

If you’re looking for something special that can “wow” folks at a Sunday brunch, a blackberry tart absolutely does the trick. And if you get the chance to brag that you picked them yourselves, so much the better!

You can make the filling completely with blackberries, or your blackberries can pair nicely with other fruits. Consider this lemon and blackberry tart recipe from Lion’s Bread that combines sour lemon curd with sweet blackberry preserves and fresh topping for a beautiful and enticing contrast.

Purple Blueberry and Blackberry Smoothie

Especially while it’s hot out, a smoothie is a perfect way to stay cool and savor all kinds of fruit. Any smoothie recipe is pretty straightforward: Blend your berries with milk until smooth and add protein powder or flavoring if you like. That’s it! Include as many or as few additional fruits or vegetables as you wish.

If you’re making a smoothie with fresh fruit instead of frozen, you’ll need to also add some ice to keep that cold, creamy consistency. It’s worth it! You’ll taste the difference fresh-picked berries make in a smoothie, with a sweeter, stronger flavor. If you’d like to freeze your blueberries for later, though, we have advice on our page all about blueberries.

Instant Homemade Jelly

Canning jams or preserves is a smart way to make fresh berries last. That can be a daunting hobby to get into, though, and is fairly time-consuming. Jelly, on the other hand, can be made quickly at home from fresh blueberries or blackberries in a matter of minutes! Enjoy it on a slice of toast or a biscuit and keep it in the fridge for a few days—nothing beats fresh jelly in a PB&J!

And if you want a jar of long-lasting jelly, jam, or preserves without the hassle, remember to pick one up at Chiles Peach Orchard when you visit, or find them in our online store.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Blackberries

Okay, this isn’t the most traditional breakfast idea, we admit it! Blackberries go very well with cheese, especially when they’re both warm and gooey. There are a lot of ways to savor this combination, like cheesecake, salad toppings, or spreads. We personally think a simple grilled cheese, like Tiffany McCauley’s at The Gracious Pantry, is the way to go.

Experiment with breads and cheeses to see what you like the most. Soft cheeses like brie are common favorites that absorb the blackberry flavor, while a sharp cheddar gives a tasty contrast (and who doesn’t love that classic grilled cheese look?).

Blueberry Muffins

How could we forget! There’s no more iconic blueberry breakfast recipe than the good old blueberry muffin. If you’ve mostly baked with the dried blueberries in pre-packaged mixes instead of ripe, fresh-picked blueberries, you’d be surprised how big of a difference they make.

The secret to a good blueberry muffin is the warm, oozy blueberries inside, regardless of how you choose to flavor your batter. Sarah Kieffer’s blueberry muffins get a little fancy with nutmeg, lemon zest, and sour cream all adding small, tasty twists. There are thousands of blueberry muffin recipes out there to try, and any of them will taste even better with fresh blueberries.

A bowl full of blueberry muffins.

Pick-Your-Own Blueberries and Blackberries

Of course, the best part of these recipes is picking the ingredients yourself! So come enjoy the fresh orchard air with us out in Crozet, VA and hand-pick a basket of blueberries or blackberries (or a bucket, now that you have a plan for them!). Check Chiles Peach Orchard’s pick-your-own fruit page for seasonal availability, guidelines, and information to plan your visit.

For even more breakfast treats, don’t forget to pick up some of our famous homemade peach cider donuts after you pick your berries! They’re only around during peach season, so get them while you can!

Chiles Peach Orchard Open for 2023 Season

Welcome back for another unforgettable season! Starting on Friday, March 31, we’ll be open daily from 10 AM–5 PM.

Over the last two months, we’ve been spending time with friends and family, attending farm market conferences, and, of course, preparing for another season of memory making and fun. We’ve even been improving our facilities, planting berries galore, and going through new inventory (three words: cute spring overload!)

This event is geared towards children ages 2-10, though all are welcome. To make the most of the day’s festivities, reserve an Easter Bunny Passport for your little one! No tickets are required for parents and non-participating children.

Spring has sprung, and that means it’s time to kick off another year of fun at Chiles Peach Orchard.

For the last few weeks, our team has been hard at work preparing the store and getting back into the swing of things. It’s been so good having everyone together again to pursue a common goal: creating the best experience possible for our visitors. The time has finally come to welcome the community back for another unforgettable season!

The Farm Market & Bakery is stocked full of exciting new items alongside your longtime favorites, including our Peach Salsa and Peach Habanero Salsa (available in the Farm Market and online)! And, of course, those delicious cider donuts are in season year-round to tide us over until the first fruits of the season ripen.

Guide to Visiting Chiles Peach Orchard this Fall

Fall is nearly here and with it comes some of our favorite moments: dunking apple cider donuts into steaming cider, carving spooky jack-o-lanterns, and baking pies for the Thanksgiving table. While we’ll be doing things a little differently this year to protect our staff, visitors, and community during the pandemic, we’re grateful for the role our family farm plays in these traditions for our visitors.

We’re offering several ways to experience the orchard this fall, including ticketed entry for weekend apple and pumpkin picking, curbside pickup for Farm Market goods and specialty foods, and distanced shopping. To plan your visit, please read the options below.

We know that many of you may decide that you won’t be with us this year. We will miss you, and we understand. We’ll be here when you are ready to come back.

We’re open daily!

The 2020 fall hours for Chiles Peach Orchard are:

September–October: 9am–6pm
On Sunday, Nov. 1: 9am–5pm
Starting Nov. 2: 10am–5pm

COVID-19 Visitor Guidelines

The orchard, of course, is an outdoor and well-ventilated setting, but please keep everyone’s visit enjoyable by keeping your face covering on unless eating or drinking, staying socially distanced, and limiting your visit to under 2 hours. Feel free to ask any of our staff members if you have any questions at all. Please review our visitor guidelines before arriving at the orchard.

Pick-Your-Own Apples and Pumpkins

10/22 UPDATE: Tickets required for weekend access through Sunday, Nov. 1.

To moderate crowd size, we will be operating at reduced capacity during our peak season. For this reason, we will require tickets for anyone planning to pick your own apples and/or pumpkins on weekends (Saturdays & Sundays).

No tickets are required to pick your own on Mondays–Fridays. (We highly recommend a weekday visit!)

The apple trees are loaded with fruit and the pumpkins are ripening nicely: if Mother Nature continues to smile on us, it’ll be a fantastic crop this year. Check out our PYO page to see what varieties are available and learn about our special picking policies.

Farm Market and Bold Rock Tap Room (Tickets Not Required)

Our Farm Market will be open for gifts and specialty food shopping, while the pavilion will offer apples, apple cider donuts, and some surprise treats (follow us on Facebook for updates).

The seasonal Bold Rock Tap Room will also be open.

48 Hours in Crozet

The Chiles family has been farming in Central Virginia for over 100 years—in Crozet, Virginia, we’re locals. Whether you’re looking for family fun, a romantic getaway, or even a solo pilgrimage, Crozet has something for everyone.

Friday Night: Meet Crozet

Get Thrifty

If you don’t want to go home empty handed, explore the many quirky shops in the area. The Green Olive Tree is a volunteer-run thrift shop, while Crozet Antiques is a charming little store filled with uncommon goods and pieces. For quaint, locally-made artisan crafts and accessories, try Crozet Artisan Depot or The Barn Swallow.

Get Boozy

They say Virginia is wine country, but the local beer scene is nothing to sneeze at. Try Pro Re Nata for an industrial vibe (the new seating area is built from shipping containers) or Starr Hill for a country-rockin good time. Check their online calendars before you go—both breweries boast food trucks, live music, and other events on most nights.

Saturday: Eat, Exercise, Be Merry

Pancake breakfast with OJ and sausage at Chiles Peach Orchard

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, after all.

C’mon Out to Chiles Peach Orchard

What better way to kick off your Saturday than with all-you-can-eat pancakes? Top them off with local fruit and you’re basically in heaven. If you can’t get enough of the pretty orchard views, stay to pick your own fruit or relax with a tasting in the Bold Rock hard cider and Prince Michel wine tasting rooms. Our farm market is stocked with gourmet goodies to take on the road, and our calendar is filled with events for the whole family. Cool off with soft-serve ice cream or fresh-pressed cider—what more could you need? Oh yeah, cider donuts.

Run It Off

Crozet is home to some of the finest running trails in Virginia. Whether you’re a seasoned runner who can’t go without your morning jog, or someone who’s been trying to get into running and maybe just needs the gorgeous Blue Ridge backdrop for that final push, visit Crozet Running for high quality athletic ware and tips on where to run.

Shop Til You Drop

No trip to Crozet would be complete without a visit to Piedmont Place, the “heartbeat and activity hub” of the town. Sign up for a class with Santosha Yoga, stock up on beer for the evening with Blue Ridge Bottle Shop (especially if you regret not buying a case or two at last night’s brewer…) or buy a book to keep you company at Over the Moon. There are also plenty of shops for smoothies, ice cream, and other snacks.

Wine and Dine

End the day at one of Crozet’s signature restaurants, like Crozet Pizza, which has regular customers from all over due to National Geographic calling it the “Best in the World,” among other raving reviews. Order a house-favorite pizza and pair it with a boozy Crozet Lemonade for a true Crozet experience. If you want something upscale (literally), try the rooftop restaurant over Smoked Kitchen and Tap.

Sunday Morning: Say Goodbye

Brunch it Up

For brunch, nothing beats Fardowners, named for the Irish immigrants who constructed tunnels through the Blue Ridge Mountains and put Crozet on the map. Except maybe second breakfast at Chiles Peach Orchard.

Hit the Road

We all feel that post-brunch nap urge, but chances are you’ve got to get back home and wrap up your getaway. Beat the sleepies with the 2017 Roaster of the Year, Mudhouse Coffee. Their thoughtfully-sourced pour-overs are sure to hit the spot when you hit the road.

Of course, don’t feel pressured to fit everything in one weekend. Crozet is a wonderfully cozy and romantic getaway from the hustle and bustle of Charlottesville—you’ll want to come back again and again!

Pancake 5K Race 2016

In true Southern summer fashion, it was a gorgeous and very hot morning for the Chiles Pancake 5K Race—a fundraiser benefiting Western Albemarle Rescue Squad—on Saturday, September 10. The Cellar has 8 ciders on tap and offers tasting flights for those looking to experience a number of different styles at once. Already loyal to one special cider? Go right ahead and enjoy your favorite cider by the pint, fill a growler, or grab a case to bring home.

The Cellar also offers fun SWAG items for sale, including T-shirts, bike jerseys, pint glasses, growlers and a myriad of other items.

A Cellar Crafted for Crozet

“Bold Rock is a locally owned hard cider producer and the Cellar at Chiles Peach Orchard is just one more way that we can become closer to the community that has been so supportive since we started back in 2012.”

For Bold Rock, it’s all about local. The great proximity to the growing Crozet and Western Albemarle community as well as the “tree to bottle” experience that they’ve enjoyed at the Tap Room at Carter Mountain Orchard was one of the motivations behind opening The Cellar at Chiles. “It really hits home for the consumer when we can explain that we source our apples from locations just like this orchard to craft our award winning hard ciders,” says Lindsay Dorrier, Director of Retail Sales for Bold Rock. “In fact, the Chiles Family is one of our principle suppliers of fresh, high quality apples used to create our hard ciders and that relationship was also a leading reason why we have now launched this new retail experience.”

The most important aspect of the retail experience? The Crozet community!

“This is community-focused,” Lindsay told the Crozet Gazette. “It’s for Crozet to be able to get to the cidery. We mean to engage with cyclists and runners. They can stop and get a refreshing cider. We’d like it to be an early-evening spot, so you don’t have to hike to Charlottesville.”

Bold Rock Outpost in Crozet

The Cellar is still a work in progress, with plans to build out the space over the summer with TVs and an indoor seating area. Other plans for the future include introducing regular music, programming, and activities for Cellar visitors and possibly expanding the daily hours on Fridays and Saturdays to accommodate the early evening crowd on the weekends.

Bold Rock looks forward to enhancing the already great Chiles Peach Orchard experience that you’ve come to know and love—cheers!
