Chiswell Wins Four Medals in the 2025 Virginia Governor’s Cup

The logo of the Virginia Governor's Cup.

Each year the Virginia Wineries Association hosts the most prestigious wine competition in Virginia, the Governor’s Cup, in partnership with the Virginia Wine Board and the Virginia Vineyards Association. This year, we were honored to have received four awards for different Chiswell vintages, including two gold medals, their highest award given to wines the judges deem of “outstanding quality.”

This year, our medal recipients were:

🥇 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon

🥇 2022 Cabernet Franc

🥈 2021 Chardonnay

🥈 2021 Meritage

Our winning wines were featured at this year’s Governor’s Cup Gala, hosted in Richmond on Thursday, March 13. We had a phenomenal time at the Gala, sharing our medalists with other enthusiasts while sampling the absolute best of Virginia wine. There were so many fascinating flavors, techniques, and personalities on display throughout the evening! Our hats go off to the wonderful winners (both wine and cider!) we had the chance to experience.

Q&A with Henry Chiles, Vineyard Manager

Here’s what our lead grower, Henry Chiles, had to say after the event:

Henry Chiles with VA Governor Ralph Northam.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin with Chiswell Vineyard Manager Henry Chiles.

Chiswell only just opened for business in 2021. How does it feel to already have multiple vintages rank as among the best in Virginia?

A: It feels great! We’re so blessed to live in a region capable of producing world-class wines. It also doesn’t hurt that we’ve had some really exceptional vintages the last few years, including ‘21, ‘23, and ‘24.

Why do you think these wines in particular stood out to the judges?

A: For the cabernet franc, I think it was the ability of the wine to embody the aspects of the vineyard and the soil. As the vineyard manager I get a full backstage view of all the factors that go into producing our fruit. This wine was able to highlight the differences between this site (Chiswell) and our other cab franc growing sites.

The cabernet sauvignon stood out for its superb drinkability, in my opinion. It’s not as heavily oaked as some California cab sauvs, and this in combination with our clay soils creates a uniquely Virginian cabernet sauvignon that I think anyone could enjoy.

Virginia wine has absolutely made a name for itself on the world stage at this point. What is it like being a part of the Virginia wine community? What does the future look like for the industry?

A: It’s such a pleasure being a part of the Virginia wine community. The collaborative nature of the Virginia wine community is what strengthens and unites us as an up-and-coming wine region on the world stage. I think our wines are continuously improving year over year as both our winemakers and vineyard managers adopt new strategies to best fit the Virginia climate.

Do you have a personal favorite Chiswell vintage?

A: My personal favorite is the 2021 Chiswell Sauvignon Blanc; unfortunately, I only have a few bottles left! My favorite of what we’ve got in the tasting room right now is the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon for a red wine and the 2021 Petit Manseng for a white.

Is there anything growing now you’re excited about? Any hints about future Chiswell varietals?

A: We planted a few new blocks of both red and white varietals in the spring of 2022 that we’re anticipating getting our first harvest from this year! I won’t spill the beans quite yet on what they are, but I can promise that at least one will be new to Chiswell. I’m also greatly anticipating the bottling of some fantastic reds from the 2023 vintage that are still aging in barrel. I think these could be the very best wines we’ve produced yet!

It was an honor to have our wines celebrated in this year’s Governor’s Cup, but as Henry said, the best is yet to come for Chiswell. We hope you take the opportunity to come out and try our award-winning vintages—our new Governor’s Flight is the perfect chance to try all four 2025 medal winners in a curated tasting order!

As for future wines, stay in the loop by subscribing to our monthly newsletter, and follow us on Facebook and Instagram to get updates on Chiswell goings-on. We’re grateful for the support of our loyal guests; we couldn’t have achieved this without you!

Chiles Peach Orchard Closed for the 2024 Season

What a bountiful year it’s been! Each season brought new and exciting fruits, events, and friends together at Chiles, and we had such a good time experiencing it all with you. We’ll be hard at work this winter preparing Chiles Peach Orchard for the 2025 season, but let’s reflect on this past year first!

This Year’s Pickings

This summer, we welcomed our first-ever crop of pick-your-own blackberries! We had high hopes for our bushes when they were planted in 2023, and they more than delivered. Visitors got to enjoy baskets full of dark, sweet, and juicy blackberries in June, and alongside strawberries and blueberries, this was one of our berry best seasons for pick-your-own.

A dry spell in the summer was cause for concern for many farms, but our peach and apple trees are resilient. They gave us another phenomenal season of delicious fruit, which lasted for a while on the branch thanks to a mild fall. With plenty of fruit and good weather, we hope you got the chance to pick some peaches and apples of your own this season!

Took my 80+ year old parents here for the first time. Ate a little bit of everything… the cider donuts, peach pie, peach wine, peach cider, cheese pizza, and peach milkshakes. They loved it and ended up buying a big box of peaches to enjoy and give to friends in their retirement home. Dad said the peach pie was the best he’s ever had… Days like today make for great memories with my parents, thanks so much!

Growing Together

The people who join us at Chiles are our favorite part of each season, and 2024 was no exception! Our Come Grow with Us children’s program was a fun way to get kids outdoors and learning, making crafts, and enjoying fresh fruit over the summer. Meanwhile, whole families swayed to the sounds of live music each weekend from May–October while sipping slushies and savoring apple cider donuts.

We always look forward to yearly traditions, like our Hop into Spring Easter event, or our Fall into Fun Festival celebrating autumn with old-fashioned apple butter making. The Crozet Lion’s Club came out this summer for our annual Homemade Peach Ice Cream Days, raising funds for the community with delicious ice cream!

See you for the 2025 season!

All of us here at Chiles Peach Orchard would like to thank you for another wonderful season. We anticipate re-opening in late March or early April. To stay up-to-date with orchard happenings and events in the new year, keep an eye out for emails from Chiles Peach Orchard and Chiles Family Orchards!

Welcome, Kephany!

At Chiswell Farm & Winery, we’re not just cultivating our vineyard. We’re cultivating a community. So as we enter our second full year of welcoming guests, we’re excited to introduce our Winery & Tasting Room Manager, Kephany Powell. Since September 2022, Kephany has been serving up exceptional wine and experiences to match. She plays an important role in our close-knit community—and in the exciting new developments on the horizon.

Chiswell's tasting room wine display

Toward the Tasting Room

After Kephany moved to Central Virginia in 1998, she began meeting with friends and family at Crozet vineyards, sharing the pleasures of companionship, wine, and those distinctive Blue Ridge views. Along the way, she became fascinated with the history of wine and viticulture. She grew enamored with the way that wineries serve as unique places to gather and make memories.

She’d found herself in a wine region with an exciting mix of the old and the new. We have a history of grape cultivation stretching back to Thomas Jefferson, and we’re also one of the up-and-coming wine regions of the world!

Kephany’s interest increased until, one day, she made the jump from her career in retail sales and management to a new career in the local wine scene. She worked at Veritas Vineyard and Winery and Keswick Vineyards before coming to Chiswell, where she combines the skills of her former career with her passion for wineries.

Crafting the Chiswell Experience

As the Winery & Tasting Room Manager, Kephany specializes in the guest experience. Visitors should feel, she says, like guests being welcomed into a home.

One of the most unique parts of Chiswell’s hospitality, which she loves, is that its beautiful and historic Greenwood home is fully open. Guests can choose any room to enjoy wine and fellowship with one another. From the cozy sitting rooms to the Big Ash Bar, from the porch to the sloping lawn, the variety of spaces allows visitors to tailor the perfect experience for their visit.

Kephany also helps guests select their wine. Her first piece of advice is always simple: drink what you enjoy! Then she might ask about the circumstance. Are you looking to sip a glass by itself, or to pair it with a meal? What is the occasion? The answers to all of these can help shape her recommendation.

For herself, she looks for wines that don’t feel overpowered by any single attribute. She loves when all the elements, from tannins to sweetness, reach a balance. Since she adores all the Chiswell wines she serves, it’s hard to get her to pick out favorites. If you press her, though, she just might choose the 2021 Sauvignon Blanc or the 2021 Cabernet Franc!

“I love engaging with our visitors and having the opportunity to serve delicious wines with a true sense of hospitality. It’s fun meeting new people and treating them to the Chiswell experience, but it’s also so rewarding to recognize familiar faces that walk through the front door.”

-Kephany

Exciting Developments

There’s so much to look forward to at Chiswell, Kephany says. One project she’s especially proud of is Crown Club. Since fall of 2022, Crown Club has offered members the opportunity to connect with exquisite wine and a tight-knit community of fellow enthusiasts. She can’t wait to carry out more of the quarterly celebrations where members pick up their wines and enjoy shared activities at the winery and orchards.

The elegant home and gorgeous views at Chiswell have also been drawing a lot of interest as a venue for weddings and special events. In the not-too-distant future, those special celebrations will be an exciting addition to Chiswell’s slate of activities. Already, small groups can book rooms to reserve a beautiful, private setting for their get-togethers.

Finally, the return to warmer months will bring extended hours, live music on Fridays and Sundays, and lots of other events that Kephany loves preparing for and then seeing our guests enjoy.

“I want everyone to experience the delicious wines and special qualities that characterize Chiswell, so I look forward to pouring you a glass soon!”

-Kephany

When you do come in for your next visit, be sure to say hi to Kephany!

Chiles Peach Orchard Open for 2023 Season

Welcome back for another unforgettable season! Starting on Friday, March 31, we’ll be open daily from 10 AM–5 PM.

Over the last two months, we’ve been spending time with friends and family, attending farm market conferences, and, of course, preparing for another season of memory making and fun. We’ve even been improving our facilities, planting berries galore, and going through new inventory (three words: cute spring overload!)

Strawberry Outlook

Last month, 5th Generation Chiles Family Farmer Henry helped plant a new crop for pick-your-own in 2024!

While it’s still too soon to say exactly when pick-your-own strawberry season will begin, we anticipate those sweet, red berries ripening in early May.

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to be among the first to know when we’re picking!

Farm Market & Bakery Goodness

Two donuts stacked on a milkshake

There’s no reason to go hungry while waiting for the strawberries to ripen!

We’re ready to fill sweet cravings with apple cider donuts, milkshakes, strawberry lemonade slushies, and strawberry and vanilla ice cream.

You can also restock your pantry with tried-and-true favorites, including seasonal salsa and salad dressings in the Farm Market & Bakery.

Hop Into Spring on Saturday, April 8

The easter bunny balancing an egg

We’re starting the 2023 orchard season on a festive note with our Hop Into Spring festival on Saturday, April 8! The day promises lots of fun: an Easter egg hunt, egg roll, potato painting, animal visits, and photo opportunities with a certain special bunny. There will be a few golden eggs hidden, too!

This event is geared towards children ages 2-10, though all are welcome. To make the most of the day’s festivities, reserve an Easter Bunny Passport for your little one! No tickets are required for parents and non-participating children.

By the way… we’re hiring!

There’s always room for more hands on deck at the Farm Market & Bakery.

If you’re looking for a part- or full-time job in an outdoor, family-oriented atmosphere, we may be looking for you!

Chiles Peach Orchard Closed for the 2022 Season

2022 was an apple-solute whirlwind! We welcomed visitors from down the road and across the country. Before we turn our attention to the next season, we want to linger on some of the year’s highlights.

This Year’s Pickings

Girl picking blueberries at Chiles Peach Orchard

It was a fruitful year for pick-your-own. The season brought plentiful pickings for blueberries and apples, as well as sweet cherries at Spring Valley Orchard!

While early spring’s cold and rainy weather played a little havoc with the strawberries and peaches, we had a beautiful season anyway. So many families came out, filling their baskets with Mother Nature’s bounty and filling our days with smiles.

The blueberry and cherry crops were unbelievable! These fruits tend to bloom after peaches, so they were not affected as harshly by the early year weather.

A New Space for Sweets and Sips

We kicked off the season with a big renovation, bringing many Chiles Peach Orchard favorites under one roof. Breaking down the interior wall in our wine shop space created a whole lot of space for the new Ice Cream & Wine Shop. It was wonderful to see folks come in and satisfy their flavor cravings with soft-serve ice cream, a glass of wine, and our newly-introduced seasonal lemonade slushies!

While our Ice Cream & Wine Shop will be hibernating for the winter, you can still enjoy our family’s wine at other venues. For a mountaintop view with your glass, visit Carter Mountain’s Country Store & Bakery. Or maybe you prefer to warm up by the fire while sipping your chosen vintage at Chiswell Farm & Winery!

Cherished Traditions

To jumpstart our series of annual events, we Hopped Into Spring. In this celebration of Easter, little ones were a gaggle of giggles while snuggling with bunnies, petting goats, and enjoying seasonal treats. We’re especially grateful to local vendors Little Miss Fancy Plants and Fairy Floss Cotton Candy, as well as Far Away Band, for making the day extra special!

In the August heat, we had a fantastic time tasting the Crozet Lion Club’s ice cream at our annual Homemade Peach Ice Cream Days. A special thanks to local musicians Max Mandu and Theocles, who kept our toes tapping all weekend long.

September brought our 10th Annual Fall Into Fun Festival, which featured live music from local musicians Mike D’Antoni and Max Mandu, pick-your-own apples, apple butter making, and the grand opening of our pumpkin patch. We’re sure the festivities were one of the many reasons why the apple trees had such a stellar picking season!

If you missed out on our timeless traditions this year, keep an eye on our events calendar for updates as the 2023 season approaches.

Our Newest Traditions

Every tradition starts somewhere, and we kicked off a few of our own this year! During October, we hosted local musicians on weekends for live music. Apple picking is already a joy, and these talented performers brought a whole new level of energy to the season. We’re excited to welcome many of them back to the orchard-side stage next year.

2022 also inaugurated a new holiday event: Cookies & Cocoa with Santa! We loved seeing kids enjoy hot chocolate, jumbo sugar cookie decorating, and storytime with Santa. Even though the Grinch snuck his way into the party, our Christmas spirit was enough to keep the day merry and bright! Mark your calendars: we’ll continue this new tradition the second week of December 2023.

Giving Back

As a locally owned and operated business, we’re always looking for ways to give back to our community. One of our favorite ways of doing so is by donating fresh-picked produce! This year, we donated five bushels of apples to local middle schools for snacks.

To continue our annual tradition of giving, we chose to donate this year’s charity tips to the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad (WARS). Our customers and staff raised $4,773.50 to support this vital, all-volunteer organization that provides rescue and EMS service 24 hours a day to our region.

In May, we also had the opportunity to be a rest stop during the Inaugural Blue Ridge Ride to Defeat ALS. Participants enjoyed peach cider donuts and strawberries as the perfect pick-me-up during their ride!

Talk of the Town

We’re always tickled to be recognized for our history and the experience we provide for our visitors. In “Our Century Farms,” the Crozet Gazette explores the history of the two area farms which have been operating for more than a hundred years. It gives a lovely account of our story, which dates all the way back to 1912 when “two men planted a couple of peach orchards on modest tracts in Batesville and Crozet.”

Meanwhile, Southern Living’s “Springtime in Charlottesville” featured us in its What to do in Town and Nearby section. It calls out our “famous peach ice cream and fresh cider doughnuts,” and how in the springtime the rows of fruit trees form must-see “tunnels of pink blooms.”

We look forward to seeing you next year when the peach blossoms start blooming! For updates on our anticipated season opening in late March or early April of 2023, follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

As always, thank you to our customers for supporting our family farm and growing your traditions with us!

This year brought some challenges, with spring weather affecting the strawberry and peach crops. Overall, it was a year of highlights, thanks to our hardworking staff and the great support from our customers.

Meet Amanda Gough: Winery & Tasting Room Manager

As we continue making our mark in the Greenwood community, we are eager to welcome Amanda Gough as our Winery & Tasting Room Manager! Amanda brings her extensive experience in hospitality, a passion for fine arts, and a taste for fantastic wine to the Chiswell Farm & Winery family.

The Road to Chiswell

A Crozet native, Amanda is deeply ingrained in the local hospitality industry. From refilling bread and water at dinner tables to executing special events and banquets, she understands what it takes to be a welcoming hostess.

Of all the things she learned during this time, she is the most grateful for having developed a problem-solving mindset. This mindset is incredibly valuable as we continue expanding winery offerings and cultivating our place in the Virginia wine community.

Amanda is also traditionally trained as an oil painter and has extensive experience with charcoal. When asked about her work as a figurative artist, she said, “Art just chooses you. The two constants in my life were always art and hospitality. Growing up, I changed what I wanted to do, but those two always stuck.”

Amanda Gough, Chiswell Winery Tasting Room Manager, in doorway.
In her years spent working with local resorts and restaurants, Amanda has seen every facet of the customer experience.

Pursuing a Passion for Wine

The Winery & Tasting Room Manager position presented itself as an opportunity for Amanda to expand her wine knowledge, of which she already had plenty. While growing up, she learned about the delights of food and wine from her mother. This sparked her interest in wine education: a field in which there’s always something new to learn or taste.

“Wine symbolizes coming together in an enjoyable time. It also symbolizes an educational moment. I’m learning as much as I can because it never stops and there’s always new groundbreaking technologies going into wine…It’s the most delicious puzzle you get to drink!”

While wine was already a personal passion for Amanda, her love of the craft was amplified while working as a Beverage Manager for a live music venue in Farmville. Through this position, she attended different wine education gatherings and purchasing meetings to develop her palette. On a personal note, Amanda enjoys acidic, deep, earthy, and bold wines—although it always depends on what she’s eating!

Chiswell Wine bottle - Rose 2020
Amanda’s personal favorite on the Chiswell wine menu is the 2020 Rosé, shortly followed by the 2021 Sauvignon Blanc.

In tasting different wines from all around the world—from Oregon pinot noirs to California cabernet sauvignons and French rosés—she was intrigued by how various agricultural factors contribute to the unique qualities of each vintage. Naturally, this intersects with our family’s 30-plus years of experience in growing wine grapes.

“Picturesque doesn’t quite cover how beautiful this estate is. It’s incredibly charming, elegant, filled with history, peaceful, intimate, and inviting.”

Embracing the Chiswell Charm and Community

Amanda’s affinity for the arts is what initially drew her to Chiswell. As an Art History major, she has always been interested in historical estates, and Chiswell fit the bill. Of the many things that make Chiswell special, one of Amanda’s favorites is that the historical home is completely available to the public.

With multiple indoor sitting rooms, guests can have their own intimate and private space, even when sharing the house with other groups. The ground floor’s “Greenwood Room”, which features emerald walls, framed botanicals, and a poetic fireplace for rainy days, is one of Amanda’s favorite indoor spaces.

Men enjoying Sparkling Wine in Chiswell's Greenwood Room.

Equally stunning is the beautiful, peaceful environment that is the Chiswell property. With panoramic views and families of birds nesting all around the home, she describes the area itself as a work of art.

In honor of the landscape—and its fortifying beauty being impossible to capture on camera—Amanda is currently commissioned to do a painting of the surrounding property for the winery’s tasting room. This painting will be one of the many ways in which she contributes to the unique setting that guests can expect when visiting.

“We have the house; we have the food; we have the wine; now we just need the Chiswell family.”

Looking at the year ahead, Amanda wants Chiswell Farm & Winery to provide an elevated experience for guests. She understands that for many, day-to-day life can be filled with stress. For that reason, she aims to make the winery a haven for folks to enjoy the people that they’re with, the wine that they are drinking, and their free time.

We are especially thankful for our stellar staff and the countless hours they dedicate to the orchard each and every year. Hats off to them and everyone who made this year one for the books!

Of course, before we dive into another year of sweet apples, sugary cider donuts, and long-lasting memories on the mountain, we’d like to look back on 2021’s many highlights!

Season’s Pickings

peaches and blueberries at chiles peach orchard

From spring strawberries to fall pumpkins and apples, there sure were plenty of pickings this year! There’s no doubt that summer’s bounty was the star.

We could hardly pick our blueberries and peaches fast enough! While blueberries were late to the party in early June, they held on for a long season and made it through the end of July.

Peaches also started out strong in June and held on ‘til the end of September. In fact, they got some well-deserved attention from Wine & Country Magazine.

Giving Back

This year, we committed to donating our tips to Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville/Albemarle as a heartfelt “thank you” for all that they do. The result? We raised over $5,000! That translates to over 900 meals for Meals on Wheels clients.

Thank you so much to all who contributed this summer!

Showing Off Our Refreshed Look

We unveiled our new look in May with refreshed logos and a fabulous website update! Leading up to the opening of our new venue, we undertook the family endeavor of unifying each of our locations’ logos with one consistent “C”.
